When is the right time for a facelift
Tuesday 3 October 2017
Is late 30s too young, or 70 too old, for a facelift? We often get asked these questions. To be honest there is no right chronological age for a facelift. Ageing is so individual, with some people’s skin ageing faster than others, often due to their genetics, and lifestyle factors such as sun exposure and smoking.
How to decide whether to have a facelift
Deciding to have a facelift is a very personal choice that usually involves careful consideration of what a facelift involves, the pros and cons of surgery, and how you feel about your face and its impact on your self-confidence.
You may think that the right time for a facelift is when you feel your face needs a nuance of rejuvenation and revitalisation, that could be achieved by lifting and tightening your facial and neck skin.
Who is a good candidate for a facelift?
A good candidate for a facelift may experience one or more of the following:
Drooping and enlarged jowls that obscure your jaw line.
Sagging of your midface.
Deepening of your nasolabial folds.
Fuller neck with excess fat and skin.
What does a facelift achieve?
A facelift is performed to tighten sagging face and neck skin and to create more youthful contours of your neckline, jawline, jowls and lower face. It will rejuvenate your face so that it looks smoother, younger and less tired.
Often a facelift is performed at the same time as blepharoplasties to achieve the best results.
What does a facelift involve?
A facelift is usually carried out under general anaesthetic and usually takes two to three hours. There are different kinds of facelift, but a facelift typically involves making incisions along your hairline, past the front of your ears and into the hairline behind your ears. Your surgeon will reposition excess fat and tighten your facial muscles. They will lift your skin and stitch it into place along the original incision, removing any excess skin.
Your surgeon will then bandage your face to minimise bruising and swelling. You will need to stay in hospital overnight and recovery normally takes about two to four weeks.
Ensure you have realistic expectations
When opting for a facelift at any age, it is important to have realistic expectations. Your consultant cosmetic surgeon will be able to talk through what you can expect to achieve from your facelift and may use before and after photos of past patients to show you the expected results.
What are the alternatives of a facelift?
Non-surgical cosmetic treatments are a popular alternative to a facelift and other facial cosmetic surgeries if you’re not ready for surgery and their use continues to rise.
Most texture issues, volume loss, fine lines and other wrinkles are best addressed using non-surgical cosmetic treatments such as fillers, consultation for fine line and wrinkles, peels and laser treatments.
Do your homework
For peace of mind it is best to check that your proposed surgeon is fully trained and qualified in cosmetic surgery. They should be registered with the GMC Specialist Register related to plastic surgery, and preferably have worked in the NHS in substantive NHS positions. You will also want to ensure that they are working out of a reputable clinic or healthcare facility.
