With medicine as a second career I have had outstanding focused training in Urological surgery in the UK. I have trained with several specialists and developed key interests.
Andrology: This is the field of Urology relating to make sexual problems. Erectile dysfunction is much more common that people think and it is devastating to both members of a relationship affecting confidence and intimacy. It is a problem for which there are many treatment options. This is often a difficult conversation for patients but the hardest step is often just asking for help. Andrology also covers changes in the shape of the penis. Bends to the penis, often as much as 90 degrees can prevent intercourse. Intervention exist to reduce pain and return the penis to its normal shape.
Endo Urology. Urinary stones are painful and can damage the kidneys. Successful management involves not only medical and or surgical intervention at the time of an acute episode, but also the consideration of preventative strategies for people who get recurrent attacks. For three years, I trained with the head of the UK endo-urology section of BAUS (British association of Urological Surgeons) and have developed significant skill in this area.
Functional Urology and Continence: In many ways this is the key to Urological practice. As we mature our waterworks often start to miss behave and this can manifest as an inability to urinate, troublesome disturbances at night of at the other end of the spectrum urinary incontinence. In almost all cases these symptoms can be improved significantly.
I also manage renal cancer and bladder cancer within the remit of my NHS work.
